January Akselrad, President
January Akselrad is the co-founder and co-President of See The Wish/Where Education Is Entertaining, a company that creates theater and music-based educational materials, presentations and programs for elementary schools on important subjects such as bullying and nutrition.
After a career of performing and teaching music, January worked for eight years building an elementary school curriculum-based theater program at The Riverdale Country School. The program, inspired by January’s belief that “what children learn through theater they never forget,” has since been duplicated at other schools.
January has written and composed dozens of award-winning curriculum, literature and ethics-based plays and musicals, which educate and empower children and young adults. A selection of her works has been published by See The Wish as part of the Dramaterials™ line of elementary school play kits. January has compiled her knowledge of staging classroom plays with elementary school students in her new primer for teachers, “Classroom Teacher As Theater Director.”
January attended Hunter College and the Julliard School, and holds a degree in music and composition. Her performance credits include singing opera, cabaret and musical theater, Off-Broadway, and children’s theaters around the world. Her musical diversity extends beyond vocals, to playing flute, piano, guitar and oboe.
In the non-profit arena, January has directed or performed many of her plays and musicals as benefits to raise money and consciousness. She has produced and scored promotional videos for philanthropic institutions and seminars for community organizations and educators. January has taken leadership positions on the boards of various philanthropic organizations and has a strong background in non-profit governance.
